Enabling B2B to collaborate on equal footing using trustless automated processes with GDPR and data privacy compliance: combining permissionless ad-hoc private chains with a permissionless public blockchain.
LTO Network’s story commences in 2014. What started out as a document engine MVP gradually evolved into a workflow engine. As time went on, our clients got bigger and processes more encompassing. Being facilitators in the processes, we became the trusted third party for the users of our system.
Organizations could be severely impacted if the data we stored were to be manipulated. We realized that we couldn't rely on trust alone. Adding layers of bureaucracy would help, but it would kill efficiency.
Then along came blockchain technology, which offered the potential of solving all these problems at once without compromising productivity.
Our mission is to provide technology which fights bureaucracy, fraud and nepotism. A problem that plagues so many organizations, industries and governments. We believe that privacy and transparency are not mutually exclusive and are willing to prove it.
Every organization runs numerous business processes, which can define the rules of a workflow, visualized as a flowchart or BPMN diagram. With LTO, a workflow is expressed as a deterministic extended Finite State Machine (FSM).
Blockchain enables organizations to run these workflows in a decentralized way, enabling each party to participate using their own nodes. Collaborating parties can share information on-chain or off-chain, such as documents, linked data or (interactive) zero knowledge-proofs.
These decentralized workflows are called Live Contracts. Similar to Smart Contracts, Live Contracts provide a dynamic method for defining logic on the blockchain. However, the purpose of a Live Contract is not to just determine state, but to actively instruct humans and computers about steps in a workflow.
Nodes can simultaneously hold and handle numerous Live Contracts. Since every Live Contract forms a private chain, nodes can spin up more VMs to handle bigger loads.
Only the nodes of the participants of a particular process have access to a particular private chain. If required by law, the entire workflow with all related data can be erased.

Rather than broadcasting events to the entire network, nodes send events to each other directly. This way complexity and latency are reduced. The public permissionless chain is used for anchoring, ensuring immutable Proof-of-Existence.
Each event is validated based on the rules and conditions defined in the workflow. Actions that are not allowed will be rejected by all other participants.
LTO makes it easy to connect your existing systems and applications to a process, since each node exposes a JSON REST API.
The heart of the application layer is the event service. It handles all incoming events, delegating further processing to the application services.
The application layer contains a number of services - like the workflow manager - designed to perform a specific task. Custom services may be added to the application layer.
Decoupling ensures a stable system even in case of bad connectivity or a high load. The message queue is the communication layer for the private chain. Two simple services manage all inbound and outbound events.
Using the NG protocol, the network pre-approves transactions every 3 seconds. With other anchoring solutions you have to wait up to 20 minutes for a response.
With other public blockchains, the required disk space tends to be high, meaning synchronizing from genesis can costs days. With LTO, a summary block is generated each day, after which a node may delete the individual transactions.
Every LTO node has a JSON REST API. Integrating anchoring into your application is as simple as creating a SHA hash or your document or data and posting it with a single HTTP request.
LTO Network has been servicing clients from various industries since 2014. For over a year our focus has been on real-world decentralized workflow applications for enterprises, governments and standalone projects.
LTO Network helps your organization drive transparency and efficiency while maintaining legal compliance and cutting down operational costs.
